Artists/Maker’s Statement
Having trained as a Fine Artist I now work in a range of mediums including etching, aquatint, linocut, gouache and pencil.
These images are a collection of original, handmade prints showing scenes in Dalby Forest in North Yorkshire. The forest is being transformed from a managed forest into a prestigious centre for mountain biking.
Having grown up in the countryside I am sensitive to an ever-changing landscape.
I have visited Dalby Forest, in North Yorkshire since I was a small child and remain absorbed by the forests character and its immense variety of texture, line and tone.
Practicing as a Fine Artist Printmaker I use two processes, etching and linocut to convey my interest in the environment.
With these techniques I make prints inspired by the life of the forest. Capturing how man is shaping the environment both in leisure and at work.
In my latest picture, ‘Dixons Hollow’ I have made the cyclist blend harmoniously with his surroundings.
The forest has been tamed so that the cyclist can enjoy his surroundings and feel part of an experience. The path makes the forest accessible, the light in the distance welcoming.
By drawing directly onto metal and lino plates, (using these as the pages of my sketchbook) the physical act of making is mirrored in the subject of the woodland, the cutting back, the reduction and then layering of one technique and image upon another reflecting the process of the land.
Using lino or zinc metal plates I explore the infinite possibilities of mark making, trying to capture what I see.
I feel that the process of printmaking is as important as the subject matter and have developed a technique that combines the use of line (etching) mark making (lino) and colour (aquatint) to convey a sense of harmony and depth in my work. This technique allows me to produce work that reflects the image as I see it, the intertwining vegetation, the filtering light and the structural characteristics of the trees.
I practice as a professional artist and tutor in my own open access print studio creating detailed images of the countryside around my Yorkshire home and I exhibit successfully throughout the country in many prestigious galleries.
I am also a member of the Leeds Fine Art club which allows me to network with like minded professionals. I am currently drawing on the experience and knowledge of the club to investigate the possibility of setting up exhibitions in local venues.
